Encaustic is the art of painting with molten beeswax, mixed with colored pigments and resin. The results are like no other mediummysterious, deep, and translucent, with a glow that seems to emanate from within. I offer a wide variety of introductory and intermediate workshops in my private studio in SE Portland and sometimes nationally. No experience is necessary, and don't worry if you aren't a painter because you can also collage with wax. My introductory classes are a great alternative for small groups like birthday parties and wedding showers. Introductory Classes

No experience is necessary for this quick start wax collage and painting class. All supplies will be provided. Day 1: We'll start by learning the basics of wax painting and fusing by making colorful paper collages with beeswax instead of glue. We'll practice techniques including layering, transparency and wax stamping. Next you'll learn to paint using techniques involving dripping, scraping and textured finishes using wax in an assortment of vivid colors.
Day 2: Next we'll concentrate on building on the skills you learned on the first day of class, but we'll go well beyond the basics. I'll do several demos of intermediate techniques and help you try each of them yourselves. I'll share my secrets on how to make image transfers, use stencils and add lots of texture to your waxy masterpieces. This 2-day class is the rough equivalent of taking my Beginning Encaustic intensive and two intermediate classes all in one weekend. Additional information will be emailed to each student at least two weeks prior to the class date along with a list of optional supplies. Space is limited to 6 students so classes fill quickly. Mixing Your Own Encaustic Medium & Paint The next class is not yet scheduled ($50). Email me or call (503) 348-9139 to join the interest list for the next class.
Please note: This is not a painting class, but you will learn how to mix your own paint. In this class we will mix a big batch of encaustic medium (beeswax and resin) and then I'll show you how to use that as a base to make encaustic paint using three types of color: powdered pigments, Lyra encaustic crayons and Enkaustikos pre-mixed colors. Then you try it! Every student will take home 3 tins of paint and one cake of encaustic medium. There will be a short supply list which will cost students anywhere from $15 - $30+ depending on what type of pigment and colors you choose to purchase. This class easily pays for itself considering the amount of paint you take home, and how much money these new skills will save you. Space is limited to 6 students so classes fill quickly. Intermediate Classes
Wax Image TransfersMonday, July 14, 1:00 - 5:00 pm, $95 Sunday, July 27, 1:00 - 5:00 pm, $95 Class will be at my studio, near SE 55th and Stark, Portland. Email me or call (503) 348-9139 to register. Think you've tried every type of image transfer imaginable? Think again. Transferring images and drawings onto wax is quick and easy, and gives a beautifully rustic effect. This intermediate class, for those already comfortable with the basics of working with wax, is the perfect introduction. Bring several copies your favorite images or drawings in the form of high contrast black and white photocopies in various sizes. With some practice you can even build up several images between layers of wax. You will leave class with 2 - 3 finished projects. We'll work with a variety of transfer techniques that work well with wax. Bring your favorite images in the form of fresh (less than 2 weeks old) black and white photo copies (like from Kinko's) or laser prints. Ink based prints won't work with this process! Remember, when you transfer images everything comes out backwards so reverse your image if that important (i.e. for text to be readable). All supplies will be provided except your personal imagery. Space is limited to 6 students. View cancellation policy.
Tons of TextureSunday, July 13, 1:00 - 5:00 pm, $95 Class will be at my studio, near SE 55th and Stark, Portland. Email me or call (503) 348-9139 to register. This intermediate class is for those already comfortable working with wax. In this fast paced class we'll use several techniques to create texture including adding fibers, using irons, brush techniques and of course tons of wax. Be prepared to work on two panels at a time as it takes many layers to properly build up texture -- but it's worth the patience! All supplies will be provided and you will leave class with 2 finished projects. Space is limited to 6 students. View cancellation policy. Working with Stencils
Sunday, July 20, 1:00 - 5:00 pm, $95 Class will be at my studio, near SE 55th and Stark, Portland. Email me or call (503) 348-9139 to register. This class will cover some of my favorite stenciling techniques for protecting one part of the panel while working on another. Do you know how to make a crisp, clean line in just the right shape to finish off your work? Maybe you'd like to cut your own stencil but aren't sure how. This class will solve those mysteries. I often use ordinary household materials to form lines, shapes and imagery in the wax and with a little practice you can too. These techniques offer simple ways to develop striking forms. This intermediate class is for those already comfortable working with wax. Space is limited to 6 students. View cancellation policy. Advanced Classes Advanced Encaustic Painting Monday, August 18, 10 am - 4 pm, $140 (3 spots left!)
Class will be at my studio, near SE 55th and Stark, Portland. Email me or call (503) 348-9139 to register. Please note: This advanced class requires attendance in at least one introductory and one intermediate class, or equivalent experience. I rarely teach this advanced class so take this opportunity if you can! I'll show you how to paint with a variety of materials on wax including dry pigments, powdered graphite and shellac to produce unusual and distinctive results. Many of these techniques require use of a propane torch, so if you haven't used one before you'll learn that too! Students must bring an N-95 rated mask for working with pigments. Gloves and all other supplies will be provided. Space is limited to 6 students so classes fill quickly. View cancellation policy. Workshops Outside of Oregon
